Raleigh has a rich history as the state capital and part of the “Research Triangle” region. Within the region there are surrounding towns like Cary, Apex, and Garner that feed into the metro. The housing mix includes traditional single-family neighborhoods, newer master-planned communities, townhouses and apartments, and some rural/agricultural fringe areas. It’s primarily urban-suburban rather than rural, with many residents commuting within the greater Triangle area. Raleigh is roughly 21 miles from its nearest large neighbour (Durham) and about 50 miles from Greensboro, making it quite central in the state. The median home price in 2025 sits around $430,000. For new builds, lots further out may cost less, but production homes in good suburbs often start in the $400,000-$600,000 range and can go higher; existing homes in many neighbourhoods are available in the $350,000-$500,000+ bracket.
